Job Description for Waiter/Waitress

The job responsibilities of a waiter can vary depending upon the type of establishment in which they are employed. However, no matter what their specific job duties may be, there are a few skills that are universal and must be followed at all times. A few of those skills include kindness, punctuality, multitasking, and the ability to take directions clearly. A waiter or waitress shoulders a large responsibility when it comes to the reputation of a specific restaurant, as one poor performance could leave a group of customers unsatisfied and thus unwilling to visit the establishment in the future. Waiters and waitresses have a wide variety of tasks to perform during their work shift, including checking customers' identification to ensure that they are of legal age to consume alcohol. Furthermore, waiters and waitresses must write down, memorize, and properly deliver sometimes complex orders for the kitchen staff to ensure that customers are getting the exact orders that they ask for. They also must seat customers upon entering the restaurant, and then memorize their seating location and be prepared to attend to them throughout their visit. It is also important that a waiter or waitress have a great deal of knowledge of the menu which the customer is ordering from. This will ensure that the waiter or waitress will be prepared to answer any questions or concerns that a customer may have in regard to any item that he or she may be interested in.
Waiter/Waitress Tasks
  • Present check for payment and provides change as needed.
  • Take food and beverage orders, give food orders to kitchen and deliver orders.
  • Maintain table appearance by pre-bussing, check drink levels and remove clutter.
  • Keep station clean, set up and take down station tables appropriately.
