Job Description for Barista

A Barista has the responsibility of taking food and drink orders from customers. They have to be cheerful and attentive to customers. Baristas must be knowledgeable about the products and services offered so they can answer questions that customers might ask. Sampling the products is important in order to establish expertise upon which customers will rely. A Barista must also know how to prepare the ordered items according the establishment's standards. Basic understanding of math and money is necessary to accept payment and make change, if needed. When Baristas are not busy taking orders, they should clean the customer areas and the food preparation area or kitchen.
A Barista must be physically able to stand during their shift. They must be able to lift and carry items, but not likely more than 50 pounds. Baristas are most often found working indoors in a cafe, coffee shop or restaurant. Some hotels also employ Baristas. They should be dressed professionally, according the standard set forth by their employer. Above all, prompt, courteous custom service is the top priority for a barista.
Most companies want baristas with some previous experience, though formal education and training are not necessary. Shifts are varied, from the traditional 9 to 5 shift, to second shift or part-time.
Barista Tasks
  • Clean and stock customer and kitchen areas.
  • Prepare drink and food orders according to organizational standards.
  • Greet customers, take orders, accept payment, and answer questions.
  • Sample products and develop expertise to educate customers.
