Job Description for Clinical Nurse Manager

A Clinical Nurse Manager is responsible for the management and operations on a nursing unit in a hospital. He/she works closely with the entire interdisciplinary team on the unit to ensure high quality of care, privacy and the utmost respect for the patients that they are ultimately responsible for. The individual will manage all of the employees on his/her unit to include nursing assistants, practical nurses, health care technicians, medical assistants and the administrative/secretarial staff.
The duties may include, but are not limited to the following: interviewing potential employees, terminating employees, recommending disciplinary actions, attending appropriate nursing conferences, developing and updating policies and procedures for the unit as needed, scheduling all positions to ensure adequate coverage for the unit, delegating duties to subordinates, providing training, providing excellent customer service, promoting a positive working relationship with subordinates, patients and their families, encouraging team-building of the staff and conducting performance evaluations.
The requirements for this position are a full, current and unrestricted registered nurse license from a state, commonwealth or territory; a graduate of a professional nursing program leading to a bachelor's degree in nursing (a master's degree in nursing is sometimes preferred, but not required); at least five years of professional nursing experience, at least three years of previous nursing management experience, excellent communication/problem solving skills, ability to resolve conflicts with subordinates and to interact with individuals from a variety of different backgrounds.
A Clinical Nurse Manager must be available to work all shifts including weekends, nights, overtime and holidays.
