Job Description for High School Teacher

A high school teacher is instrumental in the education of our youth. These teachers help to shape the future by providing not only knowledge to high school students, but a sense of confidence and self-worth, as well. Students in high school look to their teachers for accurate information on the class subject matter as well as fair and honest grading on assignments, as only with good feedback can students improve and excel. A good teacher is attentive to detail and is able to work with teenagers with a sense of patience and understanding. A teacher should be able to determine if the class is moving too fast and be able to slow things down so that students can keep up. High school teachers should also be familiar with the signs of domestic abuse, and are required to report any such suspicions to the appropriate state agencies. A degree in education is preferred, but a bachelor's degree in a related subject area may also be accepted. Teachers must have passed the PRAXIS or other state-required exam, and must have a teaching certificate in the state of employment. High school teachers should be familiar with any state testing requirements, and should know what level of accountability will apply to the teacher. A good teacher will be able to work with the state-required curriculum as well as that teacher’s own plans for the classroom. Good interpersonal skills are essential, not only for working with the students but for maintaining a good working relationship with other teachers, with the school’s administration, and with the other staff employed by the school. School days are typically Monday through Friday, and a teacher can expect to spend time at home planning lessons and grading papers.
