Job Description for Merchandise Manager

A merchandising manager is a full-time employee responsible for sustaining the culture of a store while making sure that profit goals are met. Merchandising mangers are responsible for recognizing trends and analyzing customer data and current market data to identify the products a store needs to buy and sell in order to be profitable. They will use this information to implement store merchandising plans and goals. Merchandising managers must be creative and be able to come up with new and exciting ideas for their business.
A merchandising manager must also have good negotiating skills. Merchandising managers are responsible for negotiating with sellers to find the lowest price for the products they want to buy. They are also responsible for making sure that the business is adequately stocked at all times.
A merchandising manager is also in charge of a financial aspect of the business. Merchandising managers need to meet profit goals, know how to distribute their money when buying products to stock the store, and generate reports. The merchandising manager is very powerful when it comes to determining the profitability of a business. This means that the merchandising manager must be competent at mathematics and spreadsheet programs.
The merchandising manager also plays a role on the sales floor. On store walks, a merchandising manager must provide an example of the business's customer service model as well as be a leader to the team members. Merchandising managers are in charge of coordinating work schedules and planning team activities. The merchandising manager chooses the products that the business will be selling and is responsible for the success of items, so they need make sure that their team members are excited about meeting the sales goals, too. This requires good leadership and communication skills. In addition to motivating team members, merchandising managers must be able to communicate merchandising layouts, planograms, and store listings. Most merchandising managers are required to have a four-year degree and have 1-3 years of experience in a related position.
