Civil engineers who specialize in roads and highways help ensure safe, efficient transportation on roads and highways. They apply their skills in engineering, design, and planning to survey sites for new roads, make plans for new roads, and design maintenance schemes to make sure that roads remain usable. This position also involves planning for bridges, tunnels, and ramps, as well as making sure that these pathways are safe (such as through rails, warning signs, and appropriate speed limits). This position generally takes place in an office setting during regular business hours, although overtime and travel to work sites may be required.
