The perfusionist has one primary and important task, which is to operate a heart-lung machine. This piece of equipment pumps oxygenated blood throughout the patient's circulatory system, essentially taking over the function of the heart while the organ is undergoing surgery. The perfusionist carefully monitors the patient's vital signs throughout the process, making adjustments as needed. The medical perfusionist must be a caring, dedicated, detail-oriented individual, who has a thorough understanding of the operation and maintenance of the perfusion equipment they use.
A medical perfusionist works in either a hospital or a dedicated heart surgery center. They usually have a standard weekday schedule, though they are typically expected to be on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In larger facilities, medical perfusionists are often scheduled in rotating shifts, so as to ensure that there will always be one onsite. To become a medical perfusionist requires a bachelor's or master's degree in an accredited perfusion program, with an emphasis in biology, anatomy, or physiology. The American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion provides mandatory certification programs. (Copyright 2017 PayScale.com)
