A contracted research associate is the person who is primarily responsible for planning, organizing, and conducting research in a given field and is hired on a contractual basis. This position can be found in a variety of fields, traditionally in a university or higher learning institution. A person in this position will typically work in an office. However, research-related travel may be necessary. Formal education is dependent on the organization. However, many organizations require research associates to have in-depth knowledge in their field, preferably with a bachelor’s degree.
