A retoucher is an individual who is skilled in aesthetics, specifically beauty and art. He or she would be responsible for image enhancement, including adjustment of color and light. This person is also responsible for combining images to develop new creations per company specifications for print and functional use.
Attention to detail is a necessity. The position requires a great deal of creativity and an artistic eye, as the retoucher may have little guidance. He or she is expected to produce high-quality work independently. The individual must have an advanced knowledge of image editing software, such as Photoshop, scanning equipment, 3D software. This person must also be willing to become knowledgeable about any other computer equipment and software that may be needed. Duties include scanning and retouching images to meet company requirements and standards. The retoucher may adjust photos for real estate agencies, fashion magazines, or product advertisements. He or she must be knowledgeable about color theory and management. The retoucher should be able to prioritize assignments based on necessity, and he or she should be able to meet deadlines. He or she may collaborate with photographers, graphic designers, and retouchers on projects, so people skills and the ability to be an effective team player are requirements. Problem-solving, decision-making, and troubleshooting skills are a necessity.
Starting salary is typically based on experience and ability. Retouchers should keep a portfolio of their best work to present to prospective clients. Many employers require that retouchers to have a degree from an art school or a bachelor’s degree in a field related to art.
