IIT alumni belong to a wide range of sectors. A few fields in which grads tend to find work include the engineering services industry, the architectural and engineering services industry, and the construction industry. A large chunk of former IIT students are employed in the architectural services industry; in fact, this is the most popular job sector for this population. It is quite common for IIT grads — a demographic that scores high on the SATs — to earn top-notch salaries in the workforce. Those with an education from IIT earn an average of about $78K.

The most lucrative professionals among IIT alumni are Senior Software Engineers; they earn a median annual salary of $99K. Also approaching the top of the pay scale at $75K and around $73K, respectively, are Software Engineers and Mechanical Engineers. Collecting the smallest paychecks are Intern Architects — they bring in $40K.

IIT alumni seem to appreciate living in Chicago, and just over two-fifths of grads actually choose to stay and find employment here after completing their coursework. It is also not uncommon to find former IIT students living and working in Houston, Texas — this top-paying city is a popular destination with a median salary of $109K. Though Atlanta, Ga. takes the cake for lowest pay among IIT grads (the median salary is approximately $53K there), it remains a common destination for former students. San Francisco, Calif. and New York, N.Y. are popular choices as well.

Degree Major

Financial compensation is highest for IIT grads with a Master of Engineering (MEng / ME), Electrical Engineering (EE) (average earnings climb to about $110K per year). A Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) commands less pay, and these degree-holders face median pay of $42K.

Competency in C# translates into above-average pay for Illinois Institute of Technology grads — they earn 14 percent more than their fellow graduates. IIT alumni are often well versed in Project Management, with just under one-fifth of grads ending up in jobs that require this skillset. Demonstrated ability in Engineering Design, AutoCAD, and Java rank among leading skills as well.

Benefits and Perks

Though vacation and sick days are paid for some, these benefits are reported by the minority of graduates (one-third of alumni and one-fifth of alumni, respectively). For this school, a large number of survey participants are the recipients of health benefits, and a fair number of alumni pick up dental plans, too. A large number of respondents report contributing to a 401(k). Alumni of Illinois Institute of Technology also take in life insurance, a casual working environment, a company-subsidized cell phone, and tuition reimbursement.

Related Schools

Alumni of Clarkson University pick up average paychecks of $72K, which is closest to the amount made by IIT grads among similar schools. Other schools similar to IIT include the University of Dayton, Duquesne University, and Drexel University.
