Graduates of IIT go into the construction industry, the engineering services industry, and the architectural and engineering services industry, not to mention a variety of other lines of work. The most popular career sector among alumni is the architectural services industry. Consistent with the high SAT scores reported by IIT alumni, former students go on to earn high salaries. Graduates of IIT typically earn $77K.

At this school, there are significantly more males than females — the male-to-female ratio is more than 3 to 1 — which leads to a higher number of male grads.

Former IIT students with an interest in making money consider becoming Senior Software Engineers, the highest-paying gig (earnings amount to $96K) among this alumni group. Other well-paid jobs include Software Engineers (approximately $74K) and Mechanical Engineers ($73K). Intern Architects get the short end of the stick when it comes to salary, where grads report making an average of around $40K in this job.

IIT students enjoy their time in Chicago, and nearly one-half of students actually choose to reside here post-college and find jobs in the city. It is no surprise that Houston, which hands out the biggest paychecks (the average salary is $110K), is another of the most popular spots for former IIT students. Home to the lowest median salary for IIT alumni is Atlanta, a popular place for former students despite its about $53K average paycheck. San Francisco and New York are also desirable cities.

Former IIT students head to Motorola, Inc. for above-average paychecks of $78K. Continental Automotive Systems Inc hands out the smallest paychecks, where median earnings come out to $66K.

Degree Major

A Juris Doctor (JD), Master of Jurisprudence, or Master of Law (LLM) earns IIT students the most money after college (around $144K per year). Annual salaries for those with a Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) are the lowest of the pack, earning approximately $46K.

Project Management is a common skill among IIT alumni — close to one-fifth of grads mention using it at work. Knowledge of SQL seems to be related to bigger paychecks; in fact, skilled alumni bring in salaries that are 16 percent more than their former classmates' salaries ($90K). Experience with Engineering Design, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office is highly valued as well.

Benefits and Perks

Just one-third of alumni enjoy paid vacation and merely one-fifth of alumni get paid sick time. In an effort to save up for the years ahead, a strong majority of alumni contribute to a 401(k). Health coverage is awarded to a solid majority of former students, and dental insurance is issued to most alums as well. Illinois Institute of Technology grads are also lucky enough to receive life insurance, a casual working environment, a company-subsidized cell phone, and tuition reimbursement.

Related Schools

Alumni of Clarkson University pick up average paychecks of about $72K, which is closest to the amount made by IIT grads among similar schools. Other schools similar to IIT include the University of Dayton, Duquesne University, and Drexel University.
