The most popular professional field seems to be the architectural services industry. It is typical for IIT grads — a group that usually scores high on the SATs — to earn above-average incomes as well. Starting salaries of around $78K are the median among IIT grads.


IIT grads who become Senior Software Engineers are compensated well above average — these folks are top-earners among their graduating class, making an average $99K yearly. Also notably well-paid are Senior Software Engineers and Software Engineers; their salaries approach about $88K and approximately $74K, respectively. Sitting at the bottom of the pay scale are Intern Architects who make an average of $41K.


Many IIT alumni seem to stick around Chicago after wrapping up their studies; around half of grads remain to find permanent work. IIT alumni seeking the highest salaries end up in Houston, Texas, which offers a median salary of $107K. Home to the lowest median salary for IIT alumni is Atlanta, Ga., a popular place for former students despite its $53K average paycheck. Other popular cities include San Francisco, Calif. and New York, N.Y.

Degree Major

With a median annual earnings of $109K per year, Illinois Institute of Technology grads who have a Doctorate (PhD) are the best paid among the alumni population. The degree that warrants the lowest level of financial compensation is a Bachelor of Science in Physics ($40K on average annually).


IIT grads are usually competent in Engineering Design, and just under one-fifth of alumni continue practicing this skill in their career. Knowledge of C# seems to be related to bigger paychecks; in fact, skilled alumni bring in salaries that are 19 percent more than their former classmates' salaries (approximately $94K). Proficiency in Project Management, AutoCAD, and Java command top-of-the-line rewards as well.

Benefits and Perks

Just one-third of alumni enjoy paid vacation and merely one-fifth of alumni get paid sick time. In an effort to save up for the years ahead, the vast majority of former students contribute to a 401(k). Health coverage is awarded to almost all grads, and dental insurance is issued to a strong majority of former students as well. Additional benefits handed to Illinois Institute of Technology alumni include life insurance, a casual working environment, a company-subsidized cell phone, and tuition reimbursement.
