Graduates of IIT head into a range of vocations when it comes to work; the engineering services industry, the software development industry, and the civil engineering services industry are just a few professional areas popular among alumni. A large chunk of former IIT students are employed in the financial services industry; in fact, this is the most popular job sector for this population. It is quite common for IIT grads — a demographic that scores high on the SATs — to earn top-notch salaries in the workforce. Those with an education from IIT earn an average of about $83K.

Graduates from this school who take the survey are more likely to be male — the male-to-female ratio is 3 to 1.

Among IIT alumni, those working as Software Engineers report the highest median pay of $107K, followed by Financial Advisory Services Associates (approximately $96K), and Structural Engineers ($90K). Relative to other positions, compensation dwindles for Electrical Engineers; alumni in this role face average salaries of $59K.

It is typical for many IIT grads (a little over a half of former students) to remain in Chicago, Ill., which may come as a shock given the city's depressed salaries (median pay is $82K). For those seeking more money, San Francisco, Calif. is a popular destination for former IIT students; median pay is around $100K.

Degree Major

With a median annual earnings of about $106K per year, Illinois Institute of Technology grads who have a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (ME) are the best paid among the alumni population. Ranking last in the compensation department are those holding a Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) — their annual income amounts to around $57K on average.

For Illinois Institute of Technology grads, proficiency in SQL warrants a paycheck that is 16 percent more than other alumni salaries. Many former IIT students are familiar with Project Management, and roughly one in three grads move on to positions where this experience is utilized. Experience with Engineering Design, SQL, and Microsoft Office is highly valued as well.

Benefits and Perks

Only two-fifths of alumni for this school enjoy paid vacation days and about one in three grads get paid sick time. Most alums opt for a 401(k) to save for retirement. Benefits are rather generous for graduates of this school; a large number of respondents are rewarded with health insurance and a large number of survey participants report dental coverage, too.
