The education industry, the financial services industry, and the engineering services industry are just a few of the areas in which ODU grads find work. A large chunk of former ODU students are employed in the health care industry; in fact, this is the most popular job sector for this population. Graduates of ODU typically earn $58K.

Gender

After college, a notable gender gap appears: the average female graduate makes $50K where the average male graduate hauls home $70K.

Jobs

The biggest paychecks among ODU alumni are earned by Engineering Project Managers — these former students make $85K per year. The next biggest paychecks go to Operations Managers (around $75K) and Mechanical Engineers (approximately $70K). High School Teachers face rather mediocre compensation — average salaries are actually the lowest at about $42K.

Locations

ODU alumni typically remain in Norfolk, the city they've grown to love, after graduation, and nearly one in seven grads find permanent positions in the workforce here. Washington, DC is also a common destination for ODU grads and offers the best pay with a median salary of around $77K. On the other hand, ODU alumni who end up in Chesapeake receive the lowest median salaries of $47K. Other popular cities for ODU alumni include nearby Virginia Beach and Newport News.

Employers

Typical salaries reach about $70K at Newport News Shipbuilding, where former ODU students can easily make the most money. The school itself is the most popular employer among ODU grads, with less than two percent of students finding work there, even though it offers the lowest median salary of $40K.

Degree Major

Former Monarchs who fare the best in terms of salary hold a Doctorate (PhD) and earn $97K per year. A Bachelor of Science in Human Services (HS) is less advantageous in terms of earnings; alums with this degree are the lowest earners with annual pay of $35K.

Skills

Engineering Design commands a pay premium of 38 percent for former Monarchs. Nearly one-eighth of grads report using Microsoft Office as part of their job, making it the most popular skill. Project Management, Microsoft Excel, and Engineering Design are desirable skills as well.

Benefits and Perks

Only two-fifths of alumni for this school enjoy paid vacation days and about one-third of alumni get paid sick time. A fair portion of former students have medical plans, and most graduates have dental insurance. A fair portion of respondents set up a 401(k) to save for retirement. Other benefits awarded to Old Dominion University alumni include life insurance, a casual working environment, tuition reimbursement, and a company-subsidized cell phone.
