Graduates of ODU go into the health care services industry, the government industry, and the financial services industry, not to mention a variety of other lines of work. A large chunk of former ODU students are employed in the health care industry; in fact, this is the most popular job sector for this population. Median pay for those who graduated from ODU amounts to approximately $58K.

After college, a notable gender gap appears: the average female graduate makes $51K where the average male graduate hauls home about $70K.

The biggest paychecks among ODU alumni are earned by Operations Managers — these former students make a median salary of $78K per year. The next biggest paychecks go to Mechanical Engineers ($69K) and Structural Engineers (around $66K). Sitting at the bottom of the pay scale are High School Teachers who make an average of $41K.

Many ODU grads flock to Virginia Beach, Va. In addition, former ODU students often head to Washington, DC after graduating, where the median salary comes to $78K in this top-paying city. On the flipside, the lowest-paying city popular among ODU grads is Chesapeake, Va. (median compensation is around $47K). Other cities of interest among ODU alumni include nearby Norfolk, Va. and Newport News, Va.

Degree Major

A graduate with a Doctorate (PhD) from ODU can rake in a whopping average $96K per year, more than any other degree from this school. A Bachelor of Science in Communication is less advantageous in terms of earnings; alums with this degree are the lowest earners with a median annual pay of $36K.

Former Monarchs with SQL experience garner salaries that are 51 percent more than other grads' salaries. About one in eight ODU grads wind up using Project Management at their job, which is one of the most common skills among alumni. In addition, those who are savvy in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, and Engineering Design are also considered highly skilled.

Benefits and Perks

Though vacation and sick days are paid for some, these benefits are reported by the minority of graduates (two-fifths of alumni and one in three grads, respectively). A fair number of graduates receive health insurance, and a strong majority of survey participants get dental coverage. A fair number of respondents take advantage of a 401(k) plan. Old Dominion University grads are also lucky enough to receive life insurance, a casual working environment, tuition reimbursement, and a company-subsidized cell phone.

Related Schools

Median pay for Ohio University grads is $58K, making their salaries most similar to those of ODU grads. The University of Maryland-Baltimore County, Temple University, and West Virginia University are also similar to ODU.
