The government industry, the health care industry, and the consulting industry are just a few of the areas in which ODU grads find work. The most highly represented industry among alumni is the education industry. Former ODU graduates bring in around $55K on average.

After college, a notable gender gap appears: the average female graduate makes $51K where the average male graduate hauls home $67K.

The most lucrative professionals among ODU alumni are Operations Managers; they earn a median annual salary of approximately $93K. Also approaching the top of the pay scale at about $75K and $70K, respectively, are Engineering Project Managers and Test Engineers. Salaries are anything but generous for Staff Accountants, whose earnings rank lowest on the pay scale at $45K.

Many ODU alumni remain in Norfolk after graduation; approximately one-seventh of grads find permanent positions in the workforce here. With a median salary of around $70K, Washington, DC represents the highest-paid city popular among ODU grads. For comparison, the lowest-paying city popular with ODU alumni is Chesapeake, Va., which offers a median salary of $40K. Close-by Virginia Beach, Va. and Newport News, Va. are also desirable cities among ODU alumni.

Degree Major

ODU grads who hold a Doctorate (PhD) can expect to fare better than most fellow alumni, earning an average approximately $111K per year. On the other end of the spectrum, those with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science (PolySci) tend to do the worst in terms of salary, making an average about $26K per year.

ODU grads are usually competent in Project Management, and about a tenth of alumni continue practicing this skill in their career. Former Monarchs who have experience with Budget Management can expect to make 44 percent more than other alumni ($80K on average). In addition, those who are savvy in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, and Engineering Design are also considered highly skilled.

Benefits and Perks

Though just under half of the survey participants get paid time off for vacation, only one-third of alumni receive paid sick leave. A strong majority of former students plan for retirement by taking advantage of a company-sponsored 401(k) program. Dental insurance applies to a fair number of survey participants, and a strong majority of survey participants report health coverage. Other benefits awarded to Old Dominion University alumni include tuition reimbursement, life insurance, a casual working environment, and a company-subsidized cell phone.

Related Schools

Among alumni of similar schools, Temple University grads (who make an average of $58K) earn salaries most similar to ODU alumni. Other schools similar to ODU include the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, West Virginia University, and Ohio University-Main Campus.
