Graduates of ODU work in a variety of sectors including the education industry, the financial services industry, and the engineering services industry. The most popular field is the health care industry. Starting salaries of around $58K are common among ODU grads.


A gender wage gap becomes apparent after college, with female graduates earning only $50K on average compared to approximately $70K for male graduates.


Among ODU graduates, the biggest earners are Engineering Project Managers, who haul in $75K on average. Next on the list are Mechanical Engineers and Accounting Managers, bringing in $70K and about $69K, respectively. High School Teachers wrap up the bottom of the pay scale, earning $42K.


Norfolk is a popular place for ODU students to settle after graduation, and approximately one-seventh of grads find steadfast employment in the city. ODU grads also flock to Houston, which is home to salaries significantly above average (typical pay is approximately $87K). On the far end of the pay scale, ODU alumni often reside in Chesapeake, which is home to the lowest pay at $47K. Nearby Virginia Beach is also a top pick for ODU grads, as is Newport News.


Newport News Shipbuilding offers the most generous salaries to ODU grads at around $70K. Salaries are decidedly lower at the school itself, where employees earn $40K on average.

Degree Major

Among the highest-paid ODU alumni are those with a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (ME) — they earn close to $97K per year. Graduates holding a Bachelor of Science in Human Services (HS) fare the worst in terms of compensation with yearly salaries of $35K.


SQL commands a pay premium of 49 percent for former Monarchs. ODU alumni are often well versed in Project Management, with close to an eighth of grads ending up in jobs that require this skillset. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, and Engineering Design command top-of-the-line rewards as well.

Benefits and Perks

Only about two-fifths of alumni enjoy paid vacation and one-third of alumni receive sick leave. Most grads participate in a 401(k) retirement savings plan. For this school, a fair portion of grads are the recipients of health benefits, and most alums pick up dental plans, too. Old Dominion University alumni are also on the receiving end of life insurance, tuition reimbursement, a casual working environment, and a company-subsidized cell phone.
