Job Description for Pharmacy Assistant
Pharmacy assistants are responsible for assisting licensed pharmacists with various administrative duties within pharmacies. Generally, these assistants work hours which are commensurate with the hours of the pharmacy, which may include overnight or weekend shifts on occasion. Although they work with pharmacists, and other technicians and assistants, formal education is not generally required; however, those with training and prior experience within a pharmacy may be preferred by some employers. Pharmacy assistants may have a wide range of responsibilities, including: administrative duties; customer service duties; purchasing medications; merchandising; stocking shelves and taking inventory; answering phone calls; maintaining and filing accurate records; answering prescription-related questions; directing relevant questions to on-duty pharmacists; establishing and maintaining customer account information; managing a cash register; preparing insurance claim forms; and maintaining a clean and organized environment at all times.
Aspiring pharmacy assistants must be able to handle emergency situations with ease and should have proficient computer skills, superb communication skills, excellent organizational skills, and a compassionate attitude.
