The director of strategic planning holds a management-level position that involves working mainly with their company's senior management. These directors provide high-level guidance on the company's strategic plan, consulting with organizational leaders and making presentations on the company's past and future performance. They may work with the heads of multiple departments within the company (including finance, marketing, supply, and legal), company vendors, and other companies (to launch successful joint business ventures).Read More...
Directors of strategic planning must have team-building skills for special projects they lead, and they must be able to produce plans for new business acquisitions and development. They also update existing business plans to improve their efficacy, as well as develop long-term and short-term solutions to financial problems and issues with operational functions within the company. Directors of strategic planning generally work full time in an office setting, although overtime may be required to accommodate the wide variety of professionals with whom they work. Travel may be required to meet with vendors or representatives of other companies.
A bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in a relevant field is generally required for this position, as well as at least five years of relevant experience. Directors of strategic planning must be able to work with complex data sets and spreadsheets to assess business needs and development. They must also have an excellent understanding of financial planning and financial statements. Experience with Oracle Financial Suite and/or other relevant software may be required as well.
