Social workers (BSW) help clients function in their current environment, working with clients to overcome challenges and promote resilience. They work with many different types of clients, such as individuals, families, organizations, other groups, and even whole communities. These professionals work with private and public social service agencies that provide medical, psychiatric, financial, and other services. Social workers (BSW) are viewed as generalists who have several areas of expertise; typical careers in this field involve advocacy, casework, and problem solving. They primarily work in hospitals, nursing homes, schools, substance abuse clinics, private practices, and mental health clinics. Those that work in child and family services help vulnerable children and their families, frequently dealing with issues related to child neglect or abuse. Substance abuse social workers help clients with addiction issues and co-occurring illnesses.
