Job Description for Dean of Students

The dean of students works with students, parents, and teachers to ensure students have the best possible learning experience. The dean of students also observes teachers in action, performs evaluations, and provides suggestions for improvement. Deans of students are employed in many different types of educational institutions, ranging from elementary to graduate schools. This is often a leadership position, since the dean of students typically has several associates to manage.

When there are student complaints regarding peer or teacher behavior, the dean is responsible for investigating, hearing cases, and providing any necessary disciplinary action. The dean of students may also oversee student enrichment activities. They must use established methodologies to assess programs and counseling methods under their supervision. Generally, this is a full-time position that is carried out primarily in an office setting, though travel to various departments within the organization is often necessary. In undergraduate environments, the dean of students often provides counseling to guide students on the paths required in order to fulfill their degree requirements. Deans of students at the undergraduate and graduate level often provide counseling to students on degree requirements, career paths and job availability.
