Education program directors will select, or in some cases create, an academic curriculum for each grade to implement during the school year. This involves researching many different options and selecting the one that works the best for the students the school services. They must also choose educational resources to accompany or supplement the curriculum.
Once a curriculum is selected, education program directors are typically responsible for training the teachers on how to use the materials and implement the curriculum in their classrooms. They will often provide multiple workshops so that teachers are trained and prepared before school begins. Throughout the school year, they usually check in with the teachers and discuss student responsiveness and success. This helps the reflection process when it comes time to determine whether the current curriculum is working or it needs to be changed.
Some school districts hire one education program director to oversee all subjects while others select a person for each separate school subject. For instance, there may be one education program director for math and another for reading and writing. There are also separate education program directors for special education since it comprises such a large group of students who need to have specialized support. Education program directors typically need to hold at least a bachelor’s degree in the field they are advising; masters degrees are often preferable. Some years of classroom teaching or education administration are usually also required. (Copyright 2017 PayScale.com)
