Flight operations managers work for airline companies in the transportation industry, while some also work for large corporations which maintain their own planes and/or helicopters. These managers are responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating their organizations' transportation operations and must ensure that flights run efficiently and safely in accordance with established rules and regulations from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Flight operations managers supervise and manage the work of subordinate staff to ensure that it complies with company rules, policies, and procedures, and they may conduct employee-evaluation reviews and provide timely feedback to staff. They may also interview, hire, and terminate employees, and they should have computer skills and understand their organizations' computer systems and software. They must also be able to use databases to conduct research and analyses.
