A freelance technical writer creates operations manuals and other technical documents for organizations on a freelance basis. The language used in these documents - such as technical concepts, processes and other information - often must be simplified for the end user while remaining accurate. However, in other cases, the freelance technical writer creates documents for professionals who are familiar with technical terms. In either case, it is important to have a strong comprehension of technical terms and concepts in the field within which the writer is working; they also need to be able to understand system diagrams and design specifications, as well as how the product works. In some cases, the ability to create technical illustrations may be needed in this role.
