Gas station managers ensure that their stations are running smoothly and efficiently and motorists are receiving fuel without issue. They are responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations, scheduling, keeping inventory, placing and receiving orders, hiring and training new staff, and selling promotional deals to customers. As managers, they also have higher duties such as creating and meeting budgets, maintaining fuel supply, writing rosters for staff, and reporting to company senior representatives.

Unlike retail outlets, gas stations have unique requirements. Because gas is so competitive and prices are so volatile, managers must keep up with daily reports which follow economic trends and keep regular contact with the store's owner. Safety is an issue at gas stations, so managers are required to have knowledge of this and effectively communicate it to their staff. Security is also an issue, particularly at twenty-four hour stores, and managers are responsible for organizing appropriate security protocol, including money-handling policies which keep only small quantities of cash at any given time.

Gas station managers work alongside the staff they supervise and check-in regularly with owners and senior managers. They also serve customers and interact with other professionals from time to time, such as mechanics, delivery men, and repairmen. They usually work long shifts and may occasionally work very late nights or early mornings, depending on how early or late they open.
