Head football coaches not only oversee strategies in football games, but also recruit qualified student-athletes, monitor their academic progress, and enforce all academic policies and penalties for players. They also conduct and oversee practices, assist with pre-season programs and off-season conditioning to develop the mechanics and skills of key players, and work one-on-one with particular players when necessary.Read More...
Head football coaches spend much of their workday outside and standing for several hours at a time, and candidates should have at least two years of suitable experience, such as at the assistant coaching level. They are responsible for conducting meetings with student athletes and staff, as well as answering any questions from parents of student athletes, and hours for this position may last until evening and include several days with irregular working hours, including nights and weekends.
Head football coaches generally work with between one and three assistant coaches whom the head coach will guide and direct. An associate's degree with an emphasis on physical activity may be a minimum requirement for this position, and applicants should also produce between three and five personal or business references.
