Health coaches are likely involved with assessing clients' diet and then developing a manageable, healthy diet plan. Because of this aspect of the position, a health coach may need education and/or certification as a nutritionist. They may also help patients enter the foods consumed into a calculator or database to assess how well the individual is adhering to the diet plan. Health coaches also typically assist in designing exercise programs for their clients; they work to assess the client or patient's ability to exercise, develop a program, and adjust it as the client's abilities and health change over the course of the program. The coach often typically performs relevant data entry to help track progress.
Because health coaches may have a wide range of responsibilities, education requirements vary. Some employers only require an associate's degree or equivalent for this position. Health care providers, on the other hand, may only consider individuals nursing or nutritionist certifications (obtained after completing university programs within those areas).
