Painters (artists) may work in a variety of mediums, from oil to watercolor. They may sell their paintings to museums or at art shows, and many may be commissioned to paint something specific for a private buyer. Many painters become teachers and work in higher education teaching painting and illustration to students.
Other painters, such as house painters, typically work in the construction field. They find out the details of a project and quote a price to potential buyers. Clients will select their colors, and the painters will begin preparing the surface before painting. Many painters own their own business, having one or two other employees to help with the job duties. Painters who become skilled with painting indoor walls often move on to working on the exteriors of home and offices.
All painters must have a steady hand and an eye for detail. To become a construction painter, no formal instruction is typically necessary; painters (artists) may need a bachelor's degree in fine arts to help find employment. Painters must be familiar with tools associated with painting, such as brushes and primers. (Copyright 2019 PayScale.com)
