Job Description for Retail Manager

Retail managers are in charge of overseeing the operation of a retail store, including hiring and firing store employees, overseeing inventory, and managing customer service. The responsibilities of a retail manger vary depending on the size of the store. Many times, managers in small stores have a wider range of responsibilities than managers in larger ones. Managers of small stores typically control inventory and set prices; in some cases, they are in charge of deciding when inventory goes on sale. Large retail shops usually have computers track their inventory and do not have much control on pricing or sales; in these cases, it is the manager’s responsibility to ensure that the inventory is priced correctly.

Retail Manager Reviews

Q: What is it like working as a Retail Manager?

Retail Manager in Plainfield:
"Being lowballed."
Pros: I enjoy working with the public.
Cons: I have no set schedule whatsoever.

Retail Manager in Berkeley:
"Fun place; low traffic."
Pros: Fun place to work with good coworkers and relaxed environment. A lot of freedom to make the store what you want it to be and let your sales creativity flow.
Cons: Wish there had been a little more training before entering the position--kind of did it blindly and had to feel my way around, since there was no one else who knew the position in depth. Currently not paid near even the low end of Retail Management spectrum.

Retail Manager in Portland:
Pros: The products and company standards.
Cons: The room for growth and promotion opportunity.

Retail Manager in Costa Mesa:
"Limits on raises."
Check thorough lyrics first.

Retail Manager in Tulsa:
Pros: Freedom of expression in all forms, an appreciative and supportive boss, autonomy, store discounts, flexible days off, friendly coworkers.
Cons: Rude customers, short-handedness, stress of being the only one able to complete tasks, can't afford to live comfortably without working more than forty hours, cleaning up after boss, working with a less committed coworker.

Retail Manager in Yakima:
"Lack Of Commuincation."
I would advice them to have everything done in advance, keep all their events consistent and make sure the always put in for any checks they may need for an event at least a month in advance. Stay positive and make sure to keep the staff and customers happy.

Retail Manager in Buffalo:
"A Poor Career Choice."
Pros: Customer interaction.
Cons: I am underpaid, talked poorly to and under appreciated. My education is not being utilized.
