Job Description for Senior Research Associate

Senior research associates are often employed by medical research organizations, pharmaceutical companies, scientific laboratories, and major universities. As a senior research associate, an individual performs a number of duties to support various business and scientific objectives. Day-to-day responsibilities could include clinical research or testing while adhering to strict quality control standards, working closely with other scientists and researchers to develop new scientific methods and procedures, collecting and summarizing data, executing experiments, writing detailed technical reports, creating and maintaining computerized spreadsheets and documentation, and managing, training, and mentoring other team members.

A well qualified candidate would possess a strong and varied skill set including exceptional writing, organization, analysis, and research abilities, effective communication skills, and the ability to work successfully under minimal supervision. Many senior research associates are required to operate complex laboratory equipment and robotics platforms; they also must be familiar with computer-based biology tools and methods.

These positions are typically indoors in a laboratory environment and require long periods of standing, as well as prolonged use of a keyboard and the physical dexterity necessary to operate delicate lab equipment. Generally, research associates work full time, on-site, and work standard business hours with the possibility of overtime.
