The role of senior marketing specialists is similar to that of more junior specialists, though it often carries additional supervisory or managerial duties. In terms of marketing work, senior marketing specialists provide a number of services to their employers. First and foremost, senior marketing specialists are responsible for guiding marketing strategies for products or services offered by their company.

Marketing a product or service requires a number of related tasks. For example, senior marketing specialists must review past successes and failures in marketing their companies’ goods and services and use this knowledge to guide future campaigns. They also work with other marketing specialists to formulate current marketing campaigns. In developing these marketing campaigns, they come up with materials and methods in consultation with colleagues; then, they work with the advertising department to get these ads produced. Senior marketing specialists also usually help mentor their more junior colleagues, guiding them through the process of a marketing campaign.

Two of the most important characteristics that senior marketing specialists must possess are creativity and organizational skills. They need to be able to formulate a wide variety of effective marketing ideas and keep track of a number of projects. Because marketing involves communicating ideas to potential customers, senior marketing specialists must also have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Computer skills are necessary, especially with Adobe Photoshop and other desktop publishing platforms.

Senior marketing specialists typically work full time in an office environment, though project needs may dictate overtime work with varying degrees of frequency. Senior marketing specialists usually enter the field after receiving a bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, or advertising. Most gain several years’ experience before moving to a senior role.
