Job Description for Youth Pastor

Youth pastors are responsible for the development and implementation of a youth ministry. Under the supervision of a senior pastor, they usually work with the teenagers in a church, but they may work with children of all ages, ranging from elementary to high school. They may also work with young adults in the church who are college-age.

Youth pastors must be strong in their faith and willing to share that faith with children who may not be dispossessed to receive their teachings. They must be patient and willing to go above and beyond the confines of their church or office to reach out to children. Some of these duties may involve school or home visits. They may also be called upon to minister to adults in the family of the children they work with to help ensure the spiritual needs of the children are being catered to at home as well as at church.

Youth pastors must be patient in situations where it may not be that easy to be patient, such as when dealing with rebellious or troubled children. They must be caring and willing to perform duties outside of the realm of a traditional church-based ministry, such as providing transportation to children, assisting with homework, and being available at odd hours to assist with issues that, while not directly related to their spiritual needs, are nevertheless vital to ensuring their well-being. Most churches want youth pastors to have a bachelor’s degree in youth ministry or a related field, but they may overlook educational requirements if an applicant has the necessary experience or is passionate enough about being “called to the ministry.” (Copyright 2019 PayScale.com)
