Laboratory Manager Reviews

Q: What is it like working as a Laboratory Manager?

Laboratory Manager in Toronto:
Pros: I enjoy the variety of work I do, and getting to be a part of every collection that comes through the company.
Cons: The lab covers a lot of odd jobs that can be quite menial such as taking out garbage, replacing light bulbs, disposing of old files.

Laboratory Manager in Guelph:
"Windowless tedium"
Pros: The work changes over time, so there is always something new to learn, and new students coming to the lab to work with. I also get to conduct my own research, although I'm last in the priority list, so it takes me years to run my research when it should only take a few months.
Cons: I'm currently split between two bosses, so I have to attend two lab meetings, and they seem to forget that I'm splitting my time between them, and my original boss (who's on sabbatical) continues to ask for huge lists of things to be done, even though I only have half the usual time to work on them. So I keep having to explain to her that with priorities as they are, some jobs just have to wait until I can find time (e.g., her lab and personal websites need updating). I also dislike working in a windowless lab all day.
