Job Description for Shipping Manager

A shipping manager is an administrative office worker who oversees shipping and receiving departments. Shipping managers are called upon to pack items for shipment, verify the contents of packages that are sent or received, order supplies, and monitor employees who work at lower levels.
The educational requirements for a career in shipping management will usually depend on the employer the person wishes to work for, but in nearly all cases will require a high school diploma or a GED equivalent. A certificate or an associate's degree would also be helpful, as some shipping manager positions do require post-secondary education. Helpful courses for this field should include computer applications, business communication and office administration. Any type of managerial courses would also be helpful, as well as math and anything pertaining to interpersonal skills.
The shipping manager field is a growing field, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
A shipping manager would typically work in a warehouse or office, and would also be expected to interview and train personnel. Shipping managers respond to customers' or shippers' questions and complaints, and may prepare budgets. They also have to confer with department heads. Shipping managers will deal with peak times of business when shipping becomes extremely heavy and demanding, such as during holidays. They might be called upon to develop operating procedures in ways that will make shipping more efficient. Shipping managers may have additional duties connected to the overseeing and maintenance of shipping fleets of vehicles.
A person wishing to go into the shipping management field should enjoy working with people, be detail-oriented, and be able to work fairly rapidly and multitask.
Shipping Manager Tasks
  • Hire, train, and oversee workers who receive, store, test, and ship.
  • Manage shipping and receiving operations, conditions, costs and timelines.
  • Evaluate and choose load size and transport, and coordinate from point of origin to final destination.
  • Liaise with compliance department to ensure meeting local, federal and international regulations.
