Job Description for Able Bodied Seaman

An able bodied seaman helps ensure the safe operation of boats and large ships. The seaman should have knowledge of vessel operation and maintenance to assist in carrying out service, maintenance and repairs. Another important duty is overseeing the safety of the vessel, including maintaining security and making sure that the work areas are clear of hazards. When hazards are encountered, the seaman should clear them if possible and report the hazards to a higher ranking officer. The seaman also loads and unloads cargo, supplies, equipment and passengers, as well as helps moor and dock vessels. During the voyage, the seaman carries out various duties as assigned; some positions require the seaman to steer the vessel and look out for obstructions that might hinder it.
