The appliance service technician generally answers house calls to repair appliances and perform service on them. This generally includes common household appliances such as refrigerators, dishwashers, and air conditioning units. The technician must be able to analyze appliances and figure out how to resolve the issues affecting use. The technician may also be required to order parts related to the service calls, as well as install them.
Repairs and service must be done quickly, while ensuring that maintenance is done in a quality manner. Tools and equipment must be handled with care, and the technician must also ensure the houses visited are as clean as before the job was carried out. Knowledge of billing procedures may be required, and the technician should have strong customer service skills to ensure client satisfaction. Technicians must also be able to recommend other services and products that the company offers. Follow-up calls to the customer may be needed to ensure continuous customer satisfaction.
A high school diploma or equivalent is generally required for appliance service technician positions, as well as relevant experience repairing appliances corresponding with the company's range of services. Most positions require some sort of certification and training from a technical school as well. Some positions may require working alongside other appliance service technicians, so teamwork and mentoring skills are important. However, the appliance service technician must be able to work on their own with minimal supervision as well. Many technician positions are full time, though some part-time positions are available.
