Environmental engineering technicians are responsible for establishing, reviewing, and implementing procedures for evaluating activities which have measurable impacts on the environment, such as industrial operations, hazardous spills, and other forms of pollution and contamination. These technicians often serve as support personnel for environmental engineers and work regular hours inside a lab, though some may work shifts at different times of the day or night.
Environmental engineering technicians are generally responsible for setting up experiments, collecting samples, analyzing data, using machinery and scientific instruments, and decontaminating areas affected by hazardous spills and other forms of contamination. In addition to working knowledge of tools, equipment, and processes related to environmental testing, they may also work with specialized software to analyze and evaluate statistical data related to industrial activities and their effects on the environment.
These technicians may also be tasked with determining how industrial operations affect the surrounding environment and establishing procedures to ensure that their impacts fall within the parameters established by state and federal law. They also work with organizations dedicated to environmental preservation, including both private institutions and governmental organizations such as the EPA.
Environmental engineering technicians are generally required to have at least an associate's degree in a relevant field, and some employers may require a bachelor's degree.
