Fence installers generally work outdoors at construction and remodeling sites, and their work consists of using measuring and marking devices to ensure that fences are placed according to design and property schematic drawings. After properly marking fence lines along the ground, the installer may dig for and place posts and secure them in the ground using cement or other compounds. Then, they connect the posts and apply any finishing paints or coatings.
In some situations, fence installation may require additional measuring, especially with decorative boundaries being placed with wood fences and similar materials. Fence installers may need to use saws, hammers, and other tools of the trade to customize the length of individual fence pieces to conform with the needs of the property and terrain.
Fence installation is a fairly labor-intensive job; installers may sometimes need to dig into hard or rocky earth to properly install posts. Therefore, candidates for the position should expect to spend a great deal of exertion in digging, as well as carrying materials and other labor activities. Education requirements for the position are not strict, but most dedicated fence companies and landscaping contractors prefer those who have prior experience in this type of work.
