Guidance counselors in elementary schools help students improve their academic and social skills on an individual and/or group basis, and may gather information about students via records, interviews, and tests. Strong communication and problem-solving skills are important in this position, and they may help students establish goals and plans and assist those especially in need of help. Students with concerns and needs may also come to the counselor directly or be referred by teachers or other staff members, and they may then refer students to further services that may be necessary.
These counselors may perform periodic follow-ups and must maintain student confidentiality while also working with parents when necessary. They may create workshops or other events to help motivate students, and they must always stay up-to-date with current research to continuously improve counseling techniques. A bachelor's or master's degree in education, social work, or a related field is generally required for this position, and some positions also require an elementary guidance certification.
