Job Description for Paralegal Supervisor

Paralegal supervisors oversee paralegals on behalf of their employer and hold ultimate responsibility for the work of paralegals they supervise. They provide guidance and assistance as needed to their subordinate paralegals, especially on more complex and important projects. A paralegal supervisor's duties include assigning tasks and evaluating paralegals' work, developing protocols for paralegals to follow and filing reports for his or her unit to outside agencies and county or city legal departments.

The supervisor should have an in-depth knowledge of laws and statutes within their jurisdiction, which helps them oversee the work of the paralegals they supervise. They also need to know all of their company's rules and procedures, as well as be able to train their paralegals on them. Paralegal supervisors generally work full time in a law office environment.

The minimum educational requirement for paralegal supervisors typically includes an associate's degree in paralegal studies. They must also pass either the National Association of Legal Assistants-Paralegals' certification exam or complete the American Bar Association paralegal program. Previous experience as a paralegal is needed, and managerial experience may also be required or preferred. Paralegal supervisors need to have excellent management, organizational and critical thinking skills, as well as be able to effectively plan, organize and distribute tasks to employees.
