A data scientist is the modern equivalent of a data analyst, but with business acumen; it is a job which focuses heavily on mathematical and computer science skills, statistics, analytics, computer science, and other applications. The presentation of the data is the top priority, so senior data scientists must be able to effectively communicate the numbers of a project and present them in an appropriate format for business-minded employees.
Data scientists differ from traditional data analysts in that they examine data from multiple sources in order to discover previously unseen insights to provide their company with a competitive advantage or address a particular problem. In this way, they examine the psychology behind specific data and numbers in search of causal factors.
Most data scientists have four-year bachelor's degrees, and common undergraduate majors include computer science, economics, mathematics, physics, and statistics. Many senior data scientists may have advanced degrees in these fields.
Those in this position must be comfortable with using computer applications to interpret large amounts data and should be proficient in the Python computer programming language. They must be inquisitive and able to analyze data for many hours to spot trends. Effectively communicating their findings to top-tier leaders in their organization is equally important.
Senior data scientists generally work in office environments during traditional business hours, and co-workers include both fellow IT workers and other supervisors.
