Senior directors of technical operations provide leadership, guidance, and support to a company's management regarding various technical issues, including resolving problems with software, firmware, and hardware, finding fast solutions for emergency malfunctions, and tending to the network's security. They may also be involved in strategic planning for how technical devices, tools, and software can be better used, as well as setting goals to help the company run more efficiently via technical operations.Read More...
Senior directors of technical operations may also be in charge of coordinating different projects, cost-benefit analysis, and budgeting, including comparing investment returns. These directors may coordinate and communicate with a range of co-workers, managers, clients, and executives within and outside the company and are also responsible for networking, attending business meetings and conferences, explaining technical programs, and offering support and leadership for the company. Those in this position may also be involved in selling, speaking to different developers, consultants, and vendors, and articulating the company's technical operations to clients in understandable terms.
Strong communication and presentation skills are necessary in this position, and these senior directors must also be decisive, able to multitask and meet deadlines, and work well under pressure. They should have advanced knowledge of a variety of hardware, firmware, and software, as well as business and research skills, and applicants must be willing to work long hours and weekends. A bachelor's degree in computer science is often required for this position; however, a graduate degree and professional certification in addition to years of experience are also required by some employers.
