The Internet has opened the way for new innovation in the realm of electronic device design, which has led to a number of innovations in the infrastructure that allows all of these devices work and communicate with each other. Senior electronics design engineers help design the many devices consumers use. They generally coordinate and manage teams of multidisciplinary electronics design engineers, guiding and helping them in design and development work. Though they operate mostly in a supervisory role, the senior electronics design engineer often engages in many of the same duties as a regular engineer while working with other engineers to produce a final operating prototype or to modify and refine existing designs; they also aid in testing final designs for operational fidelity.
Since the senior electronics design engineer is one of the ultimate arbiters of a final product design, the successful applicant must have a thorough understanding of all specializations relevant to that design field, such as signal processing and electrical design. They must also have the communications and leadership skills needed to effectively manage an engineering team. Strong analytical and problem solving skills are a must, as is the ability to effectively manage time, as the field often runs on deadlines.
To become a senior electronics design engineer, a minimum of a bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering field such as computers, electrical, or electronics is generally required. A master's degree in engineering may be preferred. Many employers also prefer candidates with previous experience in electronic device design (generally at least three to five years).
