One goal is to increase the awareness and success of the product on the market. The director will provide vision for the product and will delegate tasks to other departments and individuals. A senior product management director may be in charge of multiple products and/or clients at once, so it is important to be organized and be able to multitask. It is also important to stay aware of the developments within the market to stay ahead of trends and to develop ideas for new products. It is essential to be aware of what the competition is developing.
Most of the work is done in an office, though some travel may be necessary. Many years of experience in the product management field is usually necessary since this is a senior position. A senior product management director can work directly for a company manufacturing products, but it is also possible to work for an agency that provides management services for companies. Some products will be tangible, while others will relate to the information technology field. It may also be important to have experience relating to the specific product field being addressed. Strong computer skills, especially in product development software, is important. Generally a minimum of a bachelor’s degree is necessary. Some positions also require a master’s degree.
