Sheet metal supervisors are generally responsible for overseeing the manufacturing of sheet metal. They usually oversee the work of several sheet metal fabrication workers and must ensure that they meet all production quotas.
Sheet metal supervisors should have strong customer service skills to interact well with clients, and marketing skills are also beneficial to obtain more jobs. Quality checks of the produced sheet metal are necessary to ensure that the sheet metal meets clients' specifications, and the ability to read blueprints and technical drawings is also required. These supervisors must ensure that the production area is always clean, safe, and organized, as they also enforce and modify the ways in which tasks are carried out.
Sheet metal supervisors should be strongly familiar with the machinery used to produce sheet metal, and some routine maintenance and troubleshooting may be necessary. New product development and improvements in the field should be monitored to keep up with competition, and they may also train and supervise new employees, so it's important to be able to administer training and create effective training materials. A high school diploma is often a minimum requirement for this position, and at least few years of experience in sheet metal fabrication may also be required, as it is an advanced position.
