The financial services industry, public K-12 education, and the software development industry are just a few of the areas in which SF State grads find work. The education industry is the sector most highly represented among alumni. The average starting salary for a graduate of SF State is $59K.


Former SF State students with an interest in making money consider becoming Human Resources Directors, the highest-paying gig (average earnings amount to around $110K) among this alumni group. Other well-paid jobs include Human Resources Managers (approximately $88K) and Senior Accountants ($79K). Sitting at the bottom of the pay scale are Non-Profit Program Managers who make an average of $43K.


SF State students enjoy their time in San Francisco, and nearly two in five students actually choose to live and work there after graduating. It is no surprise that Pleasanton, Calif., which hands out the biggest paychecks (the average salary is about $101K), is another of the most popular spots for former SF State students. Though San Rafael, Calif. takes the cake for lowest pay among SF State grads (the median salary is $47K there), it remains a common destination for former students. Neighboring Oakland, Calif. is another common pick among SF State grads, along with San Jose, Calif.

Degree Major

A Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (CS) leads to the highest pay for SF State grads (around $125K on average per year). Those holding a Bachelor's Degree, Business Administration are less fortunate in terms of earnings, bringing in $40K on average per year.


For former Gators, proficiency in Project Management warrants a paycheck that is 47 percent more than other alumni salaries. Microsoft Excel is a popular skill among SF State alumni, with about one in seven workers reporting using it on the job. Experience with Project Management, Microsoft Office, and Customer Service is highly valued as well.

Benefits and Perks

When it comes to benefits, there is room for improvement — only two-fifths of alumni are paid for vacation and just one in three grads for sick time. Health insurance benefits extend to most grads, and a fair number of alumni sign up for dental plans. A large number of graduates plan for retirement by taking advantage of a company-sponsored 401(k) program. Additional benefits handed to San Francisco State University alumni include a casual working environment, life insurance, a company-subsidized cell phone, and tuition reimbursement.
