Graduates of SF State head into a range of vocations when it comes to work; the software services industry, public K-12 education, and the health care services industry are just a few professional areas popular among alumni. The education industry is the sector most highly represented among alumni. Those with a degree from SF State make an average of $59K.


Among SF State alumni, those working as Chief Operating Officers report the highest median pay of $140K, followed by Directors of Communications ($114K), and Human Resources Managers (approximately $93K). On the lower end, Executive Assistants report making about $47K.


SF State students enjoy their time in San Francisco, and over a third of students actually choose to live and work there after graduating. It is no surprise that San Rafael, Calif., which hands out the biggest paychecks (the average salary is around $137K), is another of the most popular spots for former SF State students. Home to the lowest median salary for SF State alumni is Portland, Ore., a popular place for former students despite its $52K average paycheck. Other common destinations for SF State grads include close-by San Jose, Calif. and Oakland, Calif.

Degree Major

SF State grads who hold a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (CS) can expect to fare better than most fellow alumni, earning an average about $121K per year. A Master of Science (MS), Counseling is less advantageous in terms of earnings; alums with this degree are the lowest earners with a median annual pay of $58K.


For former Gators, proficiency in Microsoft Office warrants a paycheck that is 34 percent more than other alumni salaries. Many SF State grads have knowledge of Microsoft Excel, with nearly one in six alumni using this program on the clock. Experience with Customer Service, Project Management, and Microsoft Office is highly valued as well.

Benefits and Perks

As for time away from work, just over half of the alumni are compensated for vacation days, but only two-fifths of alumni can take paid time off due to illness. Most grads enjoy benefits like health insurance, while the larger part of grads receive dental plans, too. Most graduates save for retirement through a 401(k) plan. San Francisco State University grads also enjoy benefits like a casual working environment, a company-subsidized cell phone, life insurance, and free drinks.
