Professionally, the education industry, the software development industry, and the retail industry are popular business areas among SF State alumni. The financial services industry is the sector most highly represented among alumni. The average salary for a grad from SF State is $60K.


In the SF State alumni professional community, Human Resources Directors make the highest median pay ($122K), though Accounting Managers (about $79K), and Human Resources Managers ($69K) are close competitors. Salaries are anything but generous for Office Managers, where earnings rank lowest on the pay scale at approximately $51K.


San Francisco is a city beloved by SF State alumni, and just over two-fifths of grads actually choose to stay and find employment here after completing their coursework. The top-paying city popular with SF State alumni is San Jose, which offers median salaries of $84K. Though Los Angeles takes the cake for lowest pay among SF State grads (the median salary is around $56K there), it remains a common destination for former students. Nearby Oakland is also a top pick for SF State grads, as is New York.


SF State grads can make the most money at Cisco Systems Inc; average pay at this company is $121K. However, many students do go on to find employment at San Francisco State University (SFSU) even though it offers the lowest average pay at $49K.

Degree Major

SF State students with a B.A. in International Relations can expect to make the most money (around $100K per year) compared to their fellow graduates. Ranking last in the compensation department are those holding a B.A. in Fine Arts — their annual income amounts to $40K on average.


Microsoft Excel is a popular skill among SF State alumni, with close to an eighth of workers reporting using it on the job. Knowledge of Project Management seems to be related to bigger paychecks; in fact, skilled alumni bring in salaries that are 22 percent more than their former classmates' salaries ($73K). Competency in Microsoft Office, Project Management, and Customer Service also warrants excellent retribution.

Benefits and Perks

When it comes to benefits, there is room for improvement — only two-fifths of alumni are paid for vacation and just one-third of alumni for sick time. A solid majority of graduates set up a 401(k) to save for retirement. A strong majority of alumni have medical plans, and a fair portion of former students have dental insurance. San Francisco State University grads are also lucky enough to receive a casual working environment, life insurance, a company-subsidized cell phone, and flexible hours.
