Much of what a swimming teacher does involves helping students, usually children, get used to the water and understand the basics of swimming safety. Teachers will typically use safer, shallow pools for teaching and colorful flotation devices to aid students in buoyancy as they grow more comfortable. These teachers teaches work up through basics like treading water to rough-paddling and kicking exercises until students are ready to swim without flotation aids.
With older children and adult students, the swimming teacher will focus on teaching proper stroke techniques, including breathing methods for freestyle, breaststroke, and the butterfly. The teacher will also work with students to learn endurance swimming methods, and may help interested swimmers lay a foundation of skills to help them pursue an advanced swim team or lifeguard position in the future.
To work as a swimming teacher, one must first have basic first aid certifications in CPR and any required lifeguard licensing within his/her jurisdiction. Many employers prefer those with prior pool experience as a lifeguard or junior lifeguard, as well. Teachers with aptitude and experience with younger children are in high demand in this field, as the majority of swim classes focus on this age group. They can expect to work regular business hours during the week in a public swimming pool environment. (Copyright 2018 PayScale.com)
