An account executive’s role varies widely across industries. An account executive at an advertising firm is focused on client relations and acquisition. At larger advertising firms, an advertising account executive may hold only one of two roles, acquisition of new clients or maintenance of existing clients; however, at a smaller company, a single executive may perform all functions. The account executive serves as the direct link between the agency and the existing (or potential) client. Thus, strong interpersonal skills are required, since customer service and satisfaction is used to determine the success of an executive. Many account executives work in an office setting but this job requires travel to potential clients. Account executives are assigned client accounts, and executives generally travel to the clients' places of business regularly. When in the office, an account executive usually has one or two assistants to handle logistics and administrative tasks. As a contractor for a client, an account executive may be required to work on call and after normal business hours to meet a deadline or client request. An account executive generally reports to a supervisor or field director.
Individuals in these positions are generally more experienced account executives who have successfully retained past clients and signed up many new clients. A bachelor's degree in business, marketing, or a related field is typically required for this position. However, some companies may accept experience in lieu of a degree.
