Service managers in the automotive and equipment repair industries generally are required to be knowledgeable about mechanical repairs on whatever specific items they perform repairs and service on. Companies expect the service manager to regularly inspect the work being performed by their staff, as well as train staff on quality controls. The service manager also needs to be aware of costs of parts and labor, as well as be able to judge the quality of estimates being made by qualified staff.
The service manager must also be knowledgeable about average time requirements for frequent repairs and be able to manage a labor schedule so that costs match what is needed for expected business. This manager also helps inventory items and may order or supervise the ordering of parts, tools, and other supplies as required. Most companies expect the service manager to be the point person to handle customer inquiries or complaints. The service manager is also expected to resolve these issues in a timely manner.
To work as a service manager, a person must usually possess at least a high school diploma or equivalent. In the automotive or equipment repair field, normally, a service manager has at least trained and worked as a mechanic or technician, which likely also requires vocational training at a technical school.
