Head cashiers are typically responsible for overseeing a team of cashiers in their organization. This often includes training, monitoring, hiring/firing, and assistance with issues that may arise over the course of the cashiers' shifts. Head cashiers must also monitor doors and exits, help prevent loss from theft, and assist customers. Head cashiers spend most of their time standing or walking the floor of the business, so they must be comfortable with being on their feet for extended periods of time. Head cashiers must also have excellent communication skills and keep the store manager informed of problems or concerns that arise with either cashiers or customers; they must also work with managers, cashiers, and customers to find solutions to issues. Head cashiers need to pay attention to detail, work well as part of a team, have good leadership skills, and have excellent training skills.
Typically, there is not a formal educational requirement for the head cashier position. However, basic math skills are helpful. Head cashiers must have previous cashiering experience, and many companies hire their head cashier from within.
