Assistant media planners may need to conduct research of demographic data and types of consumers to determine their target audience and which types of media will best reach this audience. There are often time-constraints which must be met, so these assistants should follow-up with vendors periodically to ensure this. Assistant media planners should also stay up-to-date with media trends and opportunities in order to offer the strongest media channels to clients. They may also be tasked with analyzing ad trafficking and audience reach, and commission may be offered depending on the employer.
Strong computer skills, especially with Microsoft Office programs, are important in this position and these assistants must also maintain accurate and well-organized documentation of all activities performed on the job. Because this work requires plenty of interaction with clients, vendors, and co-workers, strong written and verbal communication skills are important to employers, and a bachelor's degree or higher in marketing, communications, statistics, or advertising/media is generally required.
