Job Description for Technical Director

In general, technical directors hold different responsibilities depending on their field of work. However, they share a common, core task: Operating and managing equipment and electronics. In theaters, technical directors are in charge of overseeing lighting, props, and general construction. Different technical areas (such as lighting or props) generally have an individual who focuses solely on that one facet, while technical directors make sure the project as a whole runs efficiently. In theater productions, technical directors may also have a hands on role in ordering and or building sets and designs. In TV and film, technical directors often have a more computer-based role in which they are expected to have significant experience in programming languages and audiovisual equipment. In television, they cue up commercials and new programs, ensuring the network is on schedule and resolving technical problems by effectively delegating tasks.
