Job Description for Academic Dean
Academic deans are responsible for all aspects of managing and developing faculty and academic staff at an educational institution. Their primary responsibility is to set and meet academic goals, which includes developing an understanding of academic needs, working with faculty and other campus management to create a plan of action, and executing and evaluating results. Academic deans are involved in hiring new faculty and academic staff members. They also provide budgetary oversight for their academic department, reviewing the budget and giving feedback on updates and changing needs. Additionally, academic deans help establish academic standards for the department and review faculty and staff to ensure those standards are met. Academic deans typically work in a university or college setting during regular business hours. They spend much of their time meeting with other members of the administration to develop and implement policies regarding academic programs, the budget, staffing, and course scheduling. Academic deans are also responsible for ensuring academic programs meet regulatory and accreditation standards, and they are required to meet with accrediting agency representatives on a regular basis.
Academic deans must hold a master’s degree in education or a field related to one of their institution’s primary focus (e.g., a liberal arts degree for a liberal arts college or an engineering degree for an engineering- or science-focused institution). Five or more years of education management experience is generally required. In a larger institution requiring more responsibility and a larger student body, prior experience as an academic dean may be required.
