The automotive customer service consultant and parts technician is in the front line of any automotive parts-related business. They help customers diagnose basic issues with their vehicle, identify and locate the correct parts they need to resolve the problem, and answer any questions they may have. These professionals also help improve the store's profits by upselling and suggesting additional services, and they must ensure their organization maintains adequate and accurate inventory levels. Service consultants and parts technicians may have slightly different duties depending on whether they work in a dealership or a retail auto parts store, with the former possibly taking on additional duties in other departments such as auto sales.
As with other customer service jobs, service consultants and parts technicians should be able to interact with many different people with a positive, friendly attitude and the ability to explain automotive issues to customers with minimal related knowledge. Service consultants and parts technicians must have basic knowledge about various vehicles, their operations, maintenance, and the parts they require. They may be required to to lift up to 75 pounds, and they must be comfortable remaining on foot all day.
A high school diploma or equivalent is generally required for this position, with related automobile experience highly preferred. A background in auto mechanics and repair is important, and a postsecondary degree in engineering, sales, or auto repair certification may be beneficial.
