Biomedical engineering directors may be expected to create training programs for medical personnel, often for new employees and the implementation of new technology, and may occasionally administer training personally. These directors may have budgets to manage, so it is important to be able to secure the ideal staff and technology while controlling all associated costs. They may also oversee the management of medical equipment within the facility and establish hospital-wide regulations for the staff members who use it.
A bachelor’s or a master’s degree in biomedical engineering or a related field is generally required for this position, and strong communication skills are important in order to work well with medical staff as well as upper and executive management. Because this is an advanced position, many years of relevant experience may also be required.
