Category management directors develop sales strategies, as well as train and help develop employees so that they can put these ideas into practice. On a day-to-day basis, these directors are responsible for managing budgets, developing strong relationships with clients, analyzing data, and overseeing special projects. They are also in charge of developing retail data systems and modifying them as needed, as well as working with retailers and internal staff to make strategic decisions related to their brand. A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and at least three to five years of sales experience are typically needed for category management director positions. These professionals must have strong analytical and financial skills, proficiency with basic computer programs, problem-solving abilities, and the ability to work well on their own and in a team setting. Category management directors typically work full time in an office setting during regular business hours; however, overtime and/or alternative hours may be needed depending on their business’ requirements. Some travel is typically required as well.
